Ramiz Raja was one of the finest opening batsman to play for Pakistan.
A true gentlemen, Ramiz is the younger brother of another former
Pakistan Star, Wasim Raja. Since 1993, Ramiz was in and out of the
Pakistan side because of the chemistry between the current Pakistan
opening pair, Saeed Anwar and Aamir Sohail. Anwar and Sohail clicked
as an opening pair, and turned out to be one of the best of all time.
That left Ramiz out in the cold, so to speak!! Nevertheless, he came
back to play for Pakistan at the Number 3 position, and did a fine
job as Pakistan Captain during the tour to India for the Independence Cup.
Pakistan got to the final, after which they lost consecutive matches.
There were calls for Raja's head once the team landed back in Pakistan,
and from that point on, Ramiz has been out of the national team.
However, he has played an important role for Pakistan cricket over the
years. Till, the opening pair of Anwar and Sohail came along, Ramiz
was the sole surviving Pakistan Opener. His contribution in the 92
World Cup was well documented as he scored two hundreds in the
competition for Pakistan. Today, Ramiz is the Senior Vice President at
Allied Bank, and has led his team to their second Wills Cup win.
Ramiz has also taken up cricket commentary for television networks
and plans on being a regular in the commentary bouth in the near
future! Ramiz may not be remembered as one of the all time greats,
but he will surely be remembered as a true gentlemen, and a player
who always tried his very best for his country and his team.
Another fine Pakistan Cricketing Legend..Ramiz Raja.
